I got an e-mail from this band the other day asking if I would check them out and give them a review. They told me they play in the style of bands like Free... So I figured What the hell Skynfan loves him some Free.. So I go over to there site and figure.. hell this will probably be some youtube wanna be garage band.. Um... No... In fact what I found when I clicked up the First track Women and Whiskey was some very great old school Rock n Roll.. Complete with Killer Bass.. Solid Drums.. Great Guitar Riffs .. And a singer that can actually SING!!! Listening to the rest of the Songs on there website I can Honestly say that I am now a fan of this wonderful Band from Australia!!! These are the kinds of songs I want to rock in my car while rolling down the Highway!!! They fit right in there with the rest of the killer music that sits on my Ipod!!
Think Skynyrd/Great White/Free.. In other words... Rock n Roll!!!

Women & Whiskey is the debut EP from The Gypsy Bangles, an Australian blues rock band whose music pays tribute to the likes of Free and Deep Purple. The Gypsy Bangles feature Kegan DeBoheme on guitar and lead vocals, Alcides Stowe on drums, Peter Thwaite on bass, and Gabrielle De Giorgio provides the keys. It may be 2011, but The Gypsy Bangles style is straight out of the 1970′s from their sound to the production.

Women & Whiskey starts with “Love and Light,” and the first riff immediately takes you back in time. The classic rock sound is 100% intentional, and while The Gypsy Bangles aren’t breaking any ground here, the songs are all original and high quality. The title track features an excellent hook, as well as some fine guitar playing from Kegan DeBoheme. DeBoheme has a great voice for rock and his vocal phrasing is reminiscent of the some of the prominent singers of the 60′s and 70′s.

The Gypsy Bangles aren’t doing anything new with Women & Whiskey, but they aren’t trying to. It’s refreshing to see a new rock band with such an organic sound. Women & Whiskey is definitely worth giving a listen for any classic rock fan, and will be a band to keep an eye on as they ready their debut album.

I wasn't at this show; I barely even knew who these guys were when they were here and didn't go. I recently read a rave review about their LITTLE BIT OF DIXIE album that put them on my radar.

I picked up that album and everything I read about that album (and this band) is true - this is the BEST new southern rock I've heard since Ronnie Van Zant was still walking around barefoot on stage in the glory days of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

IF YOU LIKE SKYNYRD (real Skynyrd - 70's Skynyrd with Ronnie), IF YOU DIG THE OUTLAWS (R.I.P. Hughie Thomasson), IF YOU'RE INTO EARLY ALLMAN BROTHERS OR THE FIRST COUPLE MOLLY HATCHET ALBUMS, OR HENRY PAUL'S SOLO STUFF, OR JUST GOOD SOUTHERN ROCK WITH GREAT PLAYING, GREAT SONGWRITING, GREAT VOCALS - YOU NEED TO CHECK THESE GUYS OUT!!

This show has some new songs not any of their albums yet, some from their DIXIE album, some from their first album BAD LUCK AIN'T NO CRIME, and some from their countryish EP NEW HONKY TONK BOOTLEGS. It also has some covers -Willie Nelson's SHOTGUN WILLIE, The Outlaws' FREEBORN MAN, and a short excerpt of the Allman's MIDNIGHT RIDER that I tracked out as CD1/track6 (it was thrown in during part of the song that I think is called LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE).

Although they are small now, just making a name for themselves, opening for bands like Skynyrd, Outlaws, Kid Rock, ZZ TOp, etc, I hope these guys get the success they deserve.They should be HUGE.I just hope they don't get swallowed up by the industry and turned into some kind of souless homogenized country music / American Idol crapola act - I can see that as the easiest way to fame & fortune for them.I'd rather see them make it as a rock band though...so go out and buy their records, go to their shows, tell all your friends about them.They need to be "discovered"!

Produced by Ray Ruff and Jimmy Bowen on the Motown imprint Prodigal Records, Delaney Bramlett does a soulful-by-way-of-Macon cover of the Temptations' "I Wish It Would Rain," a good idea to try to break out of Motown with the label's own weaponry and a Top Five hit from 1968. It's an excellent re-working. Bramlett lists in his thank yous about a thousand friends -- no exaggeration -- on the back cover, from Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton to ex-wife Bonnie Bramlett, but Class Reunion by Delaney Bramlett & Friends is a different clan: Fanny'sPatti Quatro, guitarist Spider Taylor, drummers Stu Perry and Jim Keltner, and a duet with ABC artist Susie Allanson on "For Old Times Sake." Make no mistake, this is more a Delaney Bramlett album like his 1973 CBS outing, Mobius Strip, than a class-reunion project, though it does have a classy sound. The only obvious holdovers from Mobius Strip are Clydie King on backing vocals, songwriter Doug Gilmore, and manager John Bramlett. That being said, this album is very, very strong. "Everyday's a Holiday," the one track written by Bramlett, Peter Spellman, and Doug Gilmore, is a standout among ten funky, thoughtful, engrossing essays of Southern pop. Sometimes changing labels can jump start a career, but Motown was an anomaly, not able to deliver album projects the way it did hit singles in the '60s. Had Delaney Bramlett stayed on CBS and gotten support, a pure pop tune like "You Can't Measure My Love," sounding so much like an earthy Mac Davis, might've been a huge adult contemporary hit. Bramlett goes from sounding like the voice of Eric Clapton by way of Terri Gibbs on "Locked up in Alabama" (keep in mind that Gibbs hit with "Somebody's Knocking" four years after this album) to Ronnie Milsap, who, no coincidence, had a number one country hit on RCA when this album, Class Reunion, was released. As evidenced by the Genesis album of early Delaney & Bonnie and solo Bramlett tracks, the singer can be a chameleon and possesses an uncanny ability to have his own style while copping other voices simultaneously. Songwriter Randy Sharp contributes the last three titles: "Who You Gonna Blame It On," "You Were the Light," and the exquisite duet with Susie Allanson, "For Old Times Sake." What it proves is that Delaney Bramlett has major talent; had he and Bonnie stayed together, had they grown together on their CBS deal, they would have had a clear chance to dominate the charts and become an overwhelming presence in pop music. Class Reunion is a tragedy in that it is so good and so forgotten.

The Texas International Pop Festival was a music festival held at Lewisville, Texas, on Labor Day weekend, August 30-September 1, 1969. It occurred two weeks after Woodstock. The site for the event was the newly-opened Dallas International Motor Speedway, located on the east side of Interstate Highway 35 E, across from the Round Grove Road intersection.

This is the only recording from this event that I have for Delaney and Bonnie. I know they played at least 2 nights.

Catfish & Crystal were a local band in Iowa and Illinois in the early 1970's, and a fixture in
Iowa City, Iowa playing long gone venues like Gabe & Walkers, Maxwells, The C.O.D., The Lamplighter
and The Mill. Comprised like a typical jam rock band of that era, it featured two drumers,
two guitarists, a keyboard player, a bass, and sometimes a guest slide guitarist. I forget
most of their names, except Mike Watts (R.I.P) on Drums. You'll hear a guest guitarist on a couple
of the last tracks, Craig DeWitt, who still plays in Cedar Rapids. He was a monster with a slide, Echoplex,
and a volume pedal.

The high point of evening was usually when the group played what I think was an original tune,
"Old Hawk" which often went on for 30 minutes or more.

If any guys from Iowa and Illinois could contact me, I'd love to get the names of the
musicians.

A guitarist, singer, and young instrumental genius from Memphis who cut his first record at the tender age of twelve, Travis Wammack is one of the great unheralded guitarists of rock & roll. A contemporary of Lonnie Mack, Wammack was simply the fastest guitar player in a town bursting at the seams with great guitarists. By the time he was 17, he appeared on the national charts with "Scratchy," a speed-burner instrumental featuring incredible distortion and dazzling technique. Several incredible singles followed, but none charted. By the late '60s, Wammack had moved into session work at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, playing on countless hits. Howdy Folks I e-mailed Barry Lee to see what he had to say about whether or not he was on the recording and this was his reply. -Skynfan

This is Barrylee Harwood - thanks so much for the e-mail and question - I did not play on this recording - during this period of time the newly formed Rossington Collins Band was writing/rehearsing - I did (as you know) play on the Alias album and although I haven't heard the show you're talking about I'm assuming that whoever played guitar was copying the parts I played on the record???? I dunno! Maybe that's why it sounds like me.

I'm not sure about Skip - he may have worked with Jimmy in "Black Bear Angel" - you should contact him or Dorman for all the facts so that info doesn't get off track!

I'm currently in the studio with my new band CHARIOT - working on the debut album - if you still get tingles when you hear "the old stuff", you're gonna flip out when you hear what's comin' down the pike from me!

What was your first big break in music?

My first taste of the real thing was a band I had together called Loose Change. That was high school buddies that had a band that had changed faces and names and all that a few times through the years, but really a lot of the same guys played together for a long time. We started doing original music as well as some covers to get into the clubs and all. We started opening for bands, like Charlie Daniels, and The Atlanta Rhythm Section, and The Outlaws. We were kind of the hot band in town, so we always got the opening ticket for a few years, as well as killing them in the the clubs. We built us a little reputation and went to Muscle Shoals, Alan Walden was our manager then, and we recorded our album. We actually got an album on vinyl before they stopped doing that. It was released regionally and did okay, it didnít break no records but it did okay. We did a single that was going to be on our second album, by this time we were doing some pretty good shows, playing The Cotton Club in Atlanta and things like that. The song was used in a Jim Varney movie called ìFast Foods.î That gave us a little spark and we got a little air play. It was called ìLove is On the Line.î It wasnít an ìErnestî movie, but heís always the same type of character. It was a college type movie. And 96 Rock jumped on us and played us because of that.

So we opened for The Outlaws a bunch at that time. At the time, Alan was also Hughieís (Thomasson) publisher, so I had known Hughie for a few years during this time and weíd get together and jam, and Iíd sit in with The Outlaws. And when weíd go down to Muscle Shoals to record, Hughie and them would be down there a lot too, so I would play on some of their tracks and theyíd play on some of mine, mainly Hughie. We got to be big buddies and everything, which eventually lead to him asking me to join The Outlaws in 1989.

So we hooked up, and I still did a few dates that year with my band while playing with The Outlaws, and then we got going real well with The Outlaws and I ended up having to dissolve my band. I stayed with The Outlaws full time right up until the time I joined Marshall Tucker, really. I guess that was 1996, but we had kind of dissolved The Outlaws the year before that when Hughie joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1977 BLACKFOOT approached BLACK OAK ARKANSAS manager Butch Stone for representation. Although Stone could not oblige he did hook the band up with solo artist and ex-BLACK OAK ARKANSAS singer RUBY STARR (real name Connie Mierzwiac). The band, now billed RUBY STARR AND BLACKFOOT, toured America throughout late 1977. BLACKFOOT would generally open the show before performing a second set with Starr singing. In 1978 Starr fell in love with guitarist Fred Hodnik from a guesting band LUCY GREY and quit to remould this band into GREY STAR.

Travis Wammack (born 1946) is an American rock and roll guitarist from Memphis, Tennessee. A child prodigy, Wammack's first record was issued when he was twelve years old, and at 17 he hit the American charts with "Scratchy", an instrumental which peaked at #80 in 1964. Wammack got work recording at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in the 1960s, and in 1975 released a solo album which generated two hits in the US, "Easy Evil" (#72) and "Love Being Your Fool" (#38). Wammack never stopped performing, working in the 1990s with Little Richard among others.

Travis Wammack is mostly known for his work in the 60's, instrumentals with fiery guitarworks and r&b infused rock. But he's made two great southern rock albums during the 70's. Both very much r&b influenced and both very much worth getting your hands on. The first (Travis Wammack on Fame 1972) is the most rare. It's a very fine record. But the second album (Not For Sale on Capricorn 1975), though still fairly easy to find as a used album, is the better of the two. Easily one of my all time favorite southern rock albums of the 70's. -Skydog

The Earl Scruggs Revue Anniversary Special Vol 1

One-half of the legendary banjo duo Flatt & Scruggs, Earl Scruggs formed his eponymous Revue upon the demise of his longtime partnership with Lester Flatt in early 1969, and promptly began unleashing a stream of excellent albums. Anniversary Special arrived in 1975, marking the banjo man's 25th anniversary of signing with Columbia/CBS Records. It was a guest star-laden affair, with Scruggs and his two sons, the core of the Revue, joined in the studio by a host of country, folk, and other far-flung luminaries. Johnny Nash, Joan Baez, Billy Joel, and the Pointer Sisters are just a handful of the guests, an aggregate so eclectic one longs to know just how Scruggs knew them all. The booklet supplies the answers, introducing the cast and explaining their surprising links to Scruggs (most more interesting than any degree of separation Kevin Bacon can lay claim to). But as far removed as some of these people are from the banjo star, the set is solidly grounded by the members of the Revue, as they joyfully pick their way through a series of astutely chosen covers, a number related to or written by the guests involved. The album's star power certainly garnered attention, but it was the set's jubilant atmosphere, joyous eclectic flair, and inspired arrangements that pushed the band to its highest placing in the pop chart (just outside the Top 100). Inevitably, then, a second-anniversary set followed the next year. Less is known about this album, with annotator John Tobler suggesting that six of the tracks were initially begun for the first volume, but not, for unknown reasons, completed at the time -- these were subsequently finished off with only four new tracks recorded. He makes a good case, but only the most anal of fans will really care. In fact, Tobler raises more questions than he can answer, unstrung by his authoritative take on the first set. But the music is what's important, and although the name cachet was not as star-struck as its predecessor, the album was equally eclectic and entertaining. Considering the pair's history, and being -- as they are -- two parts of a whole, it's been a long time coming until they were finally reissued together on one disc. Goose Creek Symphony found its roots in the Phoenix, AZ, area originally as a countrified side project for Richie Hart & the Heart Beats. Vocalist and guitarist Charles Gearheart (aka Richie Hart) spent his childhood "up Goose Creek Hollow" in Floyd County, KY, and when he put together his good-time country-rock group, he drew upon his home's rich musical heritage as well as its name. In 1970, Gearheart and a group of local studio musicians assembled a handful of songs and presented them to Capitol Records. Capitol signed his project, forcing Gearheart to assemble a touring group. Banjo player and fiddler Fred Wise was brought in to complement existing guitarists Paul Spradlin (listed as "Paul Howard" on the album), Bob Henke ("Williard"), Mike McFadden (following the breakup of his psychedelic group Superfine Dandelion), as well as a rotating cast of bassists and drummers.

With a sound very similar to what the Band was doing at the same time, Goose Creek Symphony were rock & rollers who played a very faithful brand of country music, all the while layering rhythms and harmonies along the same lines as Buffalo Springfield and the Grateful Dead. They released albums through the mid-'70s, with that streak ending in a long hiatus from 1976 to 1990, when the group decided to re-form and record again.

Their marriage of earthy instrumentation and easygoing vibes have been able to give the group a certain longevity. Into their third decade, Goose Creek Symphony is drawing strong groups of fans to their summer festival appearances, similar to what the Dead and Jimmy Buffett have known. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide

Dave Mason & Cass Elliot - 1971

Ostensibly a Dave Mason solo album, this is one of his finest. Coupling him with Cass Elliot, however, was a stroke of genius. Elliot's involvement is, while not suspect, somewhat limited. Although she provides excellent background vocals, she tends to get a little lost in the harmony stack. Never the less, this is a great moment for her too. The album, though, is propelled by Mason's awesome songwriting talents, and tracks such as "On and On," "Walk to the Point," and several others bear this out. His guitar playing is some of his finest recorded work, especially the epic "Glittering Facade," where he layers acoustic and electric guitars to a scintillating effect. Elliot's "Here We Go Again" showcases her ability as a great lead vocalist. Paul Harris provides some excellent keyboard and string arrangements, providing a glimpse of fine work that was to follow in Stephen Stills' Manassas. Overall, this was a highly underrated album, but in the end, it is also one of the finest from the 1970s.

When Charlie Daniels released his eponymous debut in 1970, Southern rock was in its nascent stages. It had been a year since the Allman Brothers Band released their debut and Lynyrd Skynyrd wouldn't unleash its first record for another three years, so the genre was in the process of being born, and Charlie Daniels' debut plays a pivotal role in the genre -- not so much because it was directly influential, but because it points the way to how the genre could and would sound, and how country music could retain its hillbilly spirit and rock like a mother. Where the Allmans were firmly grounded in the blues, especially on the first two records, Daniels was a redneck from the start, and all ten songs on his debut were country at their foundation, even if some of it is country via the Band, as Rich Kienzle points out in his brief liner notes to Koch's 2001 reissue of the album. The Band connections derive from Daniels' time as a session musician for Columbia in Nashville, where he played on many country-rock albums, including Dylan's Nashville Skyline, but there's a heavy dose of hard rock, often via the Allmans' extended jams, on this record. Daniels simply wails on his guitar here, most notably on the six-minute closer "Thirty Nine Miles from Mobile," but, apart from the ballads, he doesn't miss a chance to solo. The heavy guitars give Charlie Daniels a real rock feel, and that vibe is continued through the loose rhythm section and a strong dose of counterculture humor, heard strongest on "The Pope and the Dope." That song also shows signs of Daniels' redneck sensibilities, which also surface in unpredictable ways throughout this wild, woolly album. He makes crude jokes, celebrates the South (particularly his home, "Georgia"), spits out bluesy leads, exaggerates his vocals, croons sweetly, and steals women. He's a redneck rebel, not fitting into either the country or the rock & roll of 1970 with this record, but, in retrospect, he sounds like a visionary, pointing the way to the future when southern rockers saw no dividing lines between rock, country, and blues, and only saw it all as sons of the south. That's what he achieves with Charlie Daniels -- a unique Southern sound that's quintessentially American, sounding at once new and timeless. 	About the Artist
	Veteran Southern Rockers, Donnie and Dennis Winters, were both born in southern Florida and moved to the hills of Tennessee at a very young age. They are the third generation of musicians in their family. Their grandfather "Pop" Winters began the "picking" tradition. His band "The Southern Strollers," were performing and recording in the late 40's. Their father Don Winters, Sr., had a successful career on his own with recordings on RCA and DECA Records. He was also a part of The Marty Robbins Show. During his 23 years with Marty, he was part of the band, the trio, and a featured solo artist.
The Winters Brothers first album was appropriately called "The Winters Brothers Band." It was released on ATCO/Atlantic Records and earned the brothers acceptance around the world. It features the songs, "I Can't Help It," "Smoky Mountain Log Cabin Jones" and "Shotgun Rider." "Sang Her Love Songs" was later recorded live at the Volunteer Jam (which was an event hosted by the Charlie Daniels Band), and is featured on the Volunteer Jams III and IV album, an EPIC Records release.
Their second album on ATCO/Atlantic Records was "Coast to Coast" and was held back due to legal complications, but has recently been independently released and is available now as “The Lost Album, a.k.a. Coast to Coast”. On EPIC Records, Charlie Daniels Band Volunteer Jam VI, the brothers recorded their song "Rich Kids." StarTrack Records based in Nashville, TN released their third album "Keep On Runnin." Their brand new CD "Southern Rockers" is released on SouthStarRecords. This new CD features 8 new southern rock songs and 4 originals from the first album that were recorded live in Nashville on November 27, 1999. All songs were written and produced by Donnie and Dennis Winters for SouthStarRecords and may be purchased through www.wintersbrothersband.com.

This Show Rocked!!!! All the whooping and Hollerin you hear are me and the rest of the Skynyrd Soldiers. The Band consisted of Charlie Hargrett of Blackfoot. Steve Wheeler guitarist for Danny Joe Brown band. Buzzy Meekins Bass for Danny Joe Brown as well as a stint in the Outlaws and the ABB family. I don't remember the singers name and the Drummer now plays Drums for Molly Hatchet.

Jimmy Hall, former lead vocalist and harmonica player for Wet Willie, has a long and varied background as a performer, working with Capricorn Records from its early days in the 1970s. Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Hall cofounded Wet Willie in 1970; over the next ten years, Hall and the group toured with Aerosmith, the Allman Brothers Band, Grand Funk Railroad and the Grateful Dead. Hall was later nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocalist for Jeff Beck's 1985 Flash album. After Wet Willie's breakup, Hall moved to Nashville to work on a solo project for Epic Records, and he's been based there ever since, finding a healthy blues scene in a city known for country music. On his 1996 effort Rendezvous With The Blues, Hall is backed by people like Clayton Ivey on piano, former Capricorn session drummer Bill Stewart, and Dr. Dan Matrazzo on Hammond B-3 organ; the record also features Johnny Sandlin, the same producer who sat behind the console on Wet Willie's 1973 live album Drippin' Wet. Mason Proffit was formed in 1969 after the disbanding of Chicago garage rock group Sounds Unlimited. Brothers John Michael Talbot and Terry Talbot decided to form a new group that was more of a folk and country band. "Two Hangmen", off of their first album Wanted... Mason Proffit, became a regional hit but was unable to chart nationally. It did, however, help their second album, Movin' Toward Happiness, chart on the Billboard 200. In 1972, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records and were placed on a national tour opening for the Grateful Dead. Warner Bros. released two of their albums, but both sold poorly, prompting the label to drop the band. Mason Proffit disbanded shortly afterward.

After the break-up, the Talbot brothers began to record Christian worship songs, earning themselves a Grammy Award nomination and several Dove Award nominations. The Talbot brothers opened for The Eagles on a national tour

Hey ya'll just wanted to let ya know why posts have slowed down a little. Today is my Birthday and were moving into a new house.

I try to enjoy my birthday but September is fast becoming my most hated month. It started with 9/11 and that same year I lost two of the best friends a guy could ever have. Nathan Womack and Shawn Emerick. I lost Nathan on my bithday to a motorcycle accident and Shawn to drugs exactly one week later. They were both in there early 20's.

Now I have lost a hero and a friend in Hughie.

Just not alot to celebrate in this month. But I'll try to keep some music posted in the middle of this move which is the main reason for lack of posts.

(antiMusic) Outlaws founder and one time Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Hughie Thomasson passed away Sunday night at his home in Brooksville, Fla. "He went out to dinner with his wife Mary on Sunday (Sept. 9), went home, got comfortable in his favorite chair to watch football and then passed away from a heart attack during a nap," according to CMT.

Lynyrd Skynyrd issued a statement on their website "With our deepest sympathy we have lost another one of our brothers to the rock and roll heaven. We had many a good time writing and playing with Hughie and spent many miles on the road together. God bless his family and all the fans that love Hughie for his playing and singing. Out hearts and prayers go out to his family. He will be truly missed. Fly on Free Bird."

Thomasson was a founder of the legendary southern rock band The Outlaws and stayed with the band through several lineup changes, breakups and reformations. During their career they produced 13 albums and amassed a loyal following. Following one of their breakups, Thomasson joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1996 and stay with them up until the 2005 reunion of the Outlaws.

Apparently we have not heard the last of Thomasson's music. CMT reports that the Outlaws have finished recording a new album, "tentatively titled Once an Outlaw, which Thomasson produced... Thomasson had also planned to re-release his solo album, So Low, under the new title, Lone Outlaw."

I just got word on Dime that Hughie Thomasson passed away at his home Sunday night in Florida from an apparent heart attack. Hughie was a damn good man. I feel blessed to have known him the little I did. He was always the nicest guy when we would be with Skynyrd. Many times Hughie sat with us down at the Hotel bar. Once I was half bitching about how Skynyrd needed to start staying in super 8's because I couldn't afford to keep staying in the fancy Hotels. He told us that all we needed to to do was call him and tell them what city's we would be seeing Skynyrd in and he would have us added to there package so we could get them great rooms at super discount prices.

I can't believe he's gone. No one Will ever sound like Hughie on guitar. There's one hell of a show being put on, on the South Side of Heaven Tonight. God Bless You Hughie Rock n Roll is gonna miss you.

Sage by Sage - 1970

This ultra-rare album of psyche and southern rock from Miami outfit, Sage, Sage By Sage appeared on the Illusion label (CM2004) in 1970. Not much is known about either the band or its label, although it is widely rumoured that Illusion was some sort of a tax scam with albums by Sage and stable mates Hopney being given away or destroyed immediately upon release. There probably is more than just a small grain of truth in this rumour, as this particular album is spectacularly rare and almost never comes up for sale. Sage By Sage is a strong album with some first-rate playing and excellent song writing. There's the decidedly southern boogie feel of the Allman Brothers about much of the instrumentation on the album, with the songs being reminiscent of, amongst others, Dr Hook or the Sutherland Brothers."

For an album that is clearly a compilation of older material meant to capitalize on the fame from Delaney & Bonnie's 1971 hits on Atco, this is a true find! There are only three tracks from the duo, all produced by Leon Russell; the nine other titles are Delaney Bramlett solo, six produced by Jackie DeShannon, three others with no producer credited. Despite the slight deception -- that this is a Delaney Bramlett album with three bonus tracks by the hit group -- the disc still works on its own. DeShannon has Delaney sounding like Gene Pitney on "Tomorrow Never Comes," while "Heartbreak Hotel" and Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" have him emulating Elvis. On the uncredited production of "Lonely Me," Mr. Bramlett goes for an early John Lennon vocal style, then veers off to Gerry and the Pacemakers territory on his originals, "Without Your Love" and "Better Man Than Me," quite revealing in that they are so different from the music Jimmy Miller produced for the group when Delaney & Bonnie on Tour With Eric Clapton emerged. Jackie DeShannon's pop production kicks in again with "Liverpool Lou," and it is back to that Gene Pitney sound. Hearing Delaney Bramlett go through these chameleon like mutations, and pull it off, is as musically amazing as it is historically important. The half-hearted liner notes give a clue that maybe the label didn't really appreciate what they had. They note that Glen Campbell, Billy Strange, Hal Blaine, Al Casey, and James Burton provide backing, but outside of some mandatory hype, there's not much else. On Clyde Pitts' "You Never Looked Sweeter," Bramlett sounds like Roy Orbison. Delaney ran the risk of giving the impression this was a tribute to male sixties vocalists, but he really does a decent job and that's what makes these tapes so charming. The Jackie DeShannon original "You Have No Choice" feels like it is straight from a beach party movie, trademark '60s production, and this time you can't peg Delaney on who he is trying to sound like; perhaps he's just being himself. The three tracks that are by Delaney & Bonnie together, all Leon Russell sessions, are the husband and wife as a Sonny & Cher type pop duo. Bacharach/David's "What the World Needs Now" (yes, the Jackie DeShannon hit from 1965) is resplendent in Nik Venet strings straight out of Linda Ronstadt's "Different Drum." It's a fun version, more fun than "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" which follows, so up-tempo that it is unnerving. "Lovin' Feeling" also shows how Bonnie Bramlett's voice overshadows Delaney, she leaves him in the dust with some phrasings. Possibly realizing this, GNP separates the third track from the duo with two Jackie DeShannon productions of Bonnie's husband. Their strongest track together is the Delaney Bramlett co-write "I Can't Take It Much Longer," the best example of the excellent direction they were heading towards. One fascinating recording that has found its way to the community is a tape of assorted studio out takes from RCB's first album. However, these are all alternate studio takes and mixes.[1]
The origination of this recording comes from guitarist Allen Collins, who had downloaded the tracks from the master reels and onto a cassette tape for home listening, which was forgotton until it was found a few years later by Collins' friend Kent Griffith. Griffith restored the tape, transferred it with Allen's permission and later distributed it privately. However, the recordings have leaked through to a more public view.
This tape contains alternate takes for almost every song on the final album except for Winners and Losers. Unfortunately, some of the tracks are only piecemeal, as they came from Collins sifting through the master reels (of which they used many) to find the portions that he wanted to review outside the studio. Here is a breakdown of what's on it:

Prime Time - a brief 44 second bit of the song at the beginning of the first verse. No solo guitar can be heard.

Three Times as Bad - There are about 3 complete tracks for this one. One take features a completely different opening drum fill. Each version also has different solos.

Don't Misunderstand Me - Two little 30 second bits seem to come from a rehearsal section and have somewhat different guitar parts. The final complete track sounds almost identical to the final version with the exception of the vocals and Barry Harwood's solo mid-way in the song. The fade out also takes longer.

One Good Man - There are three complete takes for this one. The first is a longer track which features more fills during the first verse from Gary Rossington and also lacks a final fade out (and solo). It is interesting to hear the band loosely finish the track. At points on this take, you can hear Collins tweaking various tracks on the mixing board (e.g. - the dropped-D guitar on the second chorus and the sudden presence of the solo guitar at the end). The second take also features the extra fills but has a different middle solo from Rossington. The same fade out from the album version is present. Take 3 is almost identical to the studio version except for a different ending solo performed by Allen Collins.

Opportunity - One partial take comes from a rehearsal session. The sound is somewhat muffled on that take. The other full take seems to be the studio version without the various rhythm and harmony guitars laid down by guitarist Harwood.

Getaway - There is one complete take that cuts in shortly before the beginning solo fill. It features a different middle solo (where the dual clean solo would have been). You also hear Allen Collins on the final solo, trying to come up with ideas on a Fender Stratocaster, which seems to be the guitar that he used most during the studio sessions.

Misery Loves Company - There are two takes from this. Take one mainly features a different ending solo. It starts with Collins beginning the solo in the right channel and another take of it fading in on the left channel. Both sound like they were done on his Fender Strat. Take two features another different ending solo - performed by Rossington.

Sometimes You Can Put it Out - There is only a partial take of the ending of the song, following the fast solo from Allen Collins (after the end of the lyrics). This version features a different solo from Barry Harwood and the ending is more stripped down.

There is another rehearsal tape that is dated to some point in 1979, right around the creation of the band. The tape includes Allen Collins, Derek Hess, and a second guitarist, believed to be Barry Harwood. This tape showcases the writing stage of the song "Don't Misunderstand Me." On this recording you can hear Collins and the other guitarist discuss how many counts of a certain part are to be used and then you can hear the other guitarist mention how this change in count will be dictated to (bassist) Leon Wilkeson at a later time. The venerable Delbert McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock & roll as if there were no distinctions between any of them in the best time-honored Texas tradition. A formidable harmonica player long before he recorded as a singer, McClinton's career began in the late '50s, yet it took him nearly two decades to evolve into a bona fide solo artist. A critics' darling and favorite of his peers, McClinton never really became a household name, but his resurgence in the '90s helped him earn more widespread respect from both the public at large and the Grammy committee.
After his ABC deal collapsed, Delbert McClinton signed with Phil Walden's Capricorn Records in 1978. Second Wind was his debut for the label and was produced by the legendary Johnny Sandlin (of the Allman Brothers' Fillmore East and Brothers and Sisters fame), with backing by the entire Muscle Shoals stable — horns and rhythm section, and Sandlin on lead guitar, and Clydie King and Bonnie Bramlett leading a quartet of female backing vocalists. The recipe was right for a burning session of Southern-fried soul, R&B, and funky rock & roll. The material was solid. First there was "'B' Movie" (aka the notorious "'B' Movie Boxcar Blues" from the Blues Brothers movie in 1980) from the Delbert and Glen project that derailed a few years earlier. McClinton's own "Take It Easy," "It Ain't Whatcha Eat but the Way That Ya Chew It," "Maybe Someday Baby," and "Lovinest Man" were also on the set; each one a soulful funky groover, with "Take It Easy" being a straight-up Memphis-styled soul tune. The new arrangement of Taj Mahal/Jesse Ed Davis's take on "Corrina" shuffled and simmered the pot with a burgeoning intensity. The Allmans themselves, immediately following "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" during their live set, could have executed this spooky, jazzed-up read of Willie Dixon's "Spoonful." The horn chart in Chris Kenner and Dave Bartholomew's "Sick and Tired" is so greasy it nearly slides off the platter. Add McClinton's harmonica to the break, and it's groove-a-licious dirty gumbo. In addition, McClinton's rhythmic delivery on Johnny Cash's "Big River" completely reinvents the tune before the set gets carried out with McClinton's Allen Toussaint-inspired "Lovinest Man," on which Barry Beckett's electric piano shines.
